A native of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Lane moved to Hartford in 1928. During the 1930s he enjoyed baseball games at Keney Park. A 1941 graduate of Weaver High School, he played baseball and volleyball in high school. Six months after graduation, he enlisted in the Army to serve during World War II.

In the 1960s, he played outfield for Conn’s Kings, a fast-pitch softball team made up of many of the leading baseball and softball players in the area.

Lane was active in coaching Little League baseball and running skill clinics for youth. He was manager of the Exchange Club, a sponsor of the West Hartford Youth Baseball League, from 1960-1978. In 1963, his team won the West Hartford Little League championship.

An active volunteer with the Democratic Party in West Hartford, Lane was also a founding member of Beth El Temple.
