Elizabeth Rose studied history at Swarthmore College, earned a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Rutgers University, and later completed a M.A. in Library Science from SCSU. She has a longstanding interest in Jewish history, as well as women’s history and public history, and has taught at several different colleges and universities. She is the author of A Mother’s Job: The History of Day Care and of The Promise of Preschool: From Head Start to Universal Pre-kindergarten. Before coming to the JHS, she served as the Library Director at the Fairfield Museum and History Center, where she helped develop the archives and worked on numerous exhibitions.

Lynn Newman received her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and her Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Chinese language from Connecticut College. Previously she worked at Renbrook School for 29 years as a librarian. She came to the JHS in 2016 has enjoyed watching the Society continue to expand its profile in the community through outreach efforts and collaboration with other organizations. She also volunteers in the archives at Congregation Beth Israel.

Leah Early earned her Master of Science in library science, with a concentration in archives management, from Simmons University and her Bachelor of Arts in religious studies from Reed College. She is passionate about using technology to improve access to local history collections. Leah came to the JHSGH in 2019 and has focused on the ongoing initiative to digitize and make available online the extensive JHSGH Oral History Collection.

FROM I-84 EAST

  • Take Exit 44 (Prospect Avenue)
  • Proceed past stop sign on ramp to light (Prospect Avenue)
  • Turn left onto Prospect Avenue
  • Proceed to next light (Prospect Avenue) and turn left
  • Continue north to the end of Prospect Avenue
  • Turn right at light onto Albany Avenue (Rte. 44)
  • Go 1 block in left lane to light
  • Turn left onto Bloomfield Avenue (189 north)
  • Pass University of Hartford on right
  • At traffic light bear left onto Simsbury Road (Rt. 185)
  • The parking lot driveway is after the Brookdale Place assisted living complex on your right, opposite the rear entrance to the Hartford Golf Club
  • There is a tall, well-lit directional tower indicating entry to the Community Services Building
  • Drive into the parking lot area to the front entrance

FROM I-84 WEST

  • Take exit 44 (Prospect Avenue)

  • Go 1/2 block to next light (Prospect Avenue) and turn left
  • Continue north to the end of Prospect Avenue
  • Turn right at light onto Albany Avenue (Rte. 44)
  • Go 1 block in left lane to light

  • Take exit 35-B (Rte. 218 – Windsor-Bloomfield)
  • Turn left at end of exit
  • Follow 218 west 4½ miles to Rte. 189 South
  • Take a left onto 189S/Bloomfield Avenue (traffic light)
  • Stay on Bloomfield Avenue and at fourth traffic light take a right onto Simsbury Road
  • There will be a stop sign immediately
  • Turn right (this is access to Simsbury Road)
  • The Federation parking lot is the driveway after the Sunrise complex and directly opposite the rear entrance of the Hartford Golf Club
  • There is a tall, well-lit directional tower indicating entry to the Community Services Building
  • Drive into the parking lot area to the front entrance
FROM I-91 SOUTH
