Born in Hartford in 1908, Bialeck was the first Jewish student to letter at Weaver High School, where he starred for four years on the football team and two years on the basketball team. He went on to Trinity College, where he was an outstanding member of the football and basketball teams, receiving two letters in each sport. After graduation, he played on all-Hartford’s local team that won the city championship in 1927.
He received a master’s degree from the New Britain Teachers College and became a teacher in the Hartford Public Schools starting in 1934. He stayed at Northeast Junior High for his 35-year career in teaching. He organized the Hartford Federation of Teachers in 1947 and initiated legislation to benefit teachers at the state level, with laws relating to tenure, pension rights and retirement. He was also a pioneer in the field of special education.
