This lesson is part of the “Learning Through Places” project of Where I Live Connecticut, a social studies resource for 3-4 grades.

It highlights the Himmelstein family farm in Lebanon, Connecticut, which has been farmed by three generations. It started with Louis and Doris Himmelstein, Jewish immigrants who purchased the farm in 1913 and ran it as a dairy farm for many years. Today the Himmelstein farm raises vegetables and sells food to local markets and directly to consumers. The land has been permanently preserved as farmland through the state’s Farmland Preservation Program.
