Philip Sack

Inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, 1995

A Hartford native, Sack was an all-city shortstop, earning a letter in baseball at Weaver High School, where he was in the class of 1929 and part of the winning 1928 team. He returned to Hartford after graduating from New York University in 1933.

He was a fixture at the YMCA handball courts and the Keney Park golf course for several decades, winning medals and trophies. Sack was regarded as one of the best handball players in Hartford in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1956, he won the Connecticut Handball doubles championship; in 1969 he was Keney Park’s Seniors golf champ, and in 1970 at the age of 60, he won the Keney City tour golf tournament.

After retiring from a 40-year career with the Prudential Insurance Company in 1975, he enjoyed assisting the golf pro at Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford.
