Abe Silverman was the first Jewish captain of the Hartford High basketball team and was described in the local press as “one of the best young basketball players developed in Hartford for a long time.”
At William & Mary College he led the basketball team to the state championship as high scorer and played football and baseball. He was a member of the original Hartford Dixies, a professional basketball team that went to the national championship in 1925.
Silverman received a master’s degree from Columbia University, taught physical education for 41 years in the Hartford School system and coached basketball at Hillyer College, Morse College, and Federal College.
