In honor of Israeli Independence Day, we are honoring Rebecca Affachiner, who in addition to her other accomplishments, became known as the "Betsy Ross of Israel." Born in New York, she lived in Hartford in the 1920s before moving to Palestine in 1934. When independence was declared in 1948, Affachiner cut up a bed sheet, sewed into it a six-pointed blue star and two stripes, and colored it with blue crayon, hanging it from the window of her apartment. She became the first person to display this enduring symbol of the new nation. The flag stayed in Rebecca’s possession until her death in 1966, when her friend and caretaker Ezra Gorodesky donatedit to the archive at Ben Gurion University in Jerusalem. You can read more about Affachiner at: jwa.org/thisweek/may/14/1948/this-week-in-history-rebecca-affachiner-unfurls-first-israeli-flag ... See MoreSee Less
