Mandell JCC, Chase Family Gallery, 335 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford

Elbert Weinberg’s life may be considered a Hartford story, but he was widely regarded, nationally, as one of the most promising young sculptors of the 1950s and 1960s. His sculptures can be found in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, as well as in his home city of Hartford and in public and private collections across the United States and Europe. Weinberg is best known for his two Holocaust memorials, in Wilmington, Delaware, and West Hartford, Connecticut. These memorial works are imbued with historical, literary, mythological, and biblical meaning that belong to a historical art tradition that was falling out of favor during the turbulent mid-twentieth century.
