Biographical/Historical
Biographical/Historical note Jewish Family Service was organized as United Jewish Charities in 1912. Originally UJC provided long-term financial assistance and loans to families in need. In 1940, after the passage of the Social Securities Act, independent charities were no longer called upon to provide financial relief to the needy. UJC was reorganized as United Jewish Social Service and provided a variety of services rather than monetary grants. In 1968 the name was changed to Jewish Family Service of Greater Hartford. Among the agency’s most notable efforts was the resettlement of German refugees, particularly those with disabilities, in the Hartford area during the 1930s through the 1950s. Summer camps and other youth programs were also provided; these activities eventually led to the creation of the Jewish Community Center as a separate organization. Jewish Family Services, under its various names has had offices on Main, Pleasant, Ann, Church, and Vine Streets in Hartford. During the 1960s, the agency relocated to Asylum Street in West Hartford. At this date (2005) plans are underway for Jewish Family Service to move into new quarters at the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation complex. Today the organization, staffed by professional social workers, provides many services to the community, including counseling for families and individuals of all ages. Services are provided to all regardless of religious affiliation.
